Sikkal Umapathy Kandasamy

K Umapathy (21 Feb 1950 - 4 Apr 2017)
was an Indian Carnatic musician, Nadaswaram maestro, vocalist. He was popularly known as "Nadaswara vidwan Sikkal Umapathy". Tamilnadu government awarded "Rajarathina" in 2008 from Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.Karunanidhi (29-01-2008).


Personal life

Sikkal K.Umapathy was born on 21-Feb-1950, in Chithambaram, India, to a musically affluent family. Umapathy started learning nadaswaram at the age of 10. At the age of 15, his father passed away. Since the pressure of supporting his family fell on him, he dropped out of school. He married Ms. Lalitha whose father (Mr.Sundarrajan pillai) is also a well known nadaswaram player in Tirumalairayanpattinam, Karaikal . He has three sons and one daughter.

Career

Umapathy received musical training from his grand father. He started giving his concerts on nadaswaram from his age 12. He served in many famous temples in and around nagapattinam including Sikkal singaravelan temple. He was popularly called as "sikkal umapathy". His unique style of nadaswaram attracted everyone and became more popular in Tamilnadau. He traveled all around the world to perform in many sabhas, temples, concerts and festivals. He was made nadaswaram player in the temple karumari amman, Thiruverkadu. Sikkal Umapathy took a number of younger nadaswaram players as his accompanists. He was also served in Tamilnadu Music school, Erode for seven years. He received many awards and honors.
